I always presumed that they were a softer sort of plastic with dull edges, since you don't want your children to kill themselves on them. Normally, I'd say that would be begging for lawsuits, but I'm quite certain people have young children and animate piles of sludge as family pets at the same time...

And really, they could easily do their best at something worthwhile.
