babel_hacker | Day 26 - [Video] | [Action] for Goldenrod

[He have two important businesses to do today.

First of all are the Golett eggs. He promised Miyuki he’ll breed an egg for her and as he expected, his Golurk and the Ditto produced three eggs, just like last time. Guess that means he’ll look for people to take them in again.

He shows the eggs on the screen, purposely showing only two of them. One is for Miyuki, anyway.]

Hey, guys! I have Golett eggs over here! They’re ground/ghost type and can learn to Fly after evolving into Golurk!

[He move the ‘Gear to show his Golurk, who give a sad wave. Hey, remember that flying robot from a while ago?]

I accept P3000 or an egg trade! [It’s higher than last time, but uh, he kind of need the money after shopping at the department store.] As well as promising to take good care of them, of course.

Hey, Miyuki! I got an egg for you!

[His second business is more serious and private.]

Keisuke, are you free?

[He have his suspicions. About why Keisuke starts off with two Pokemon instead of one, and why he appeared in Goldenrod and not New Bark Town. Atsuro really hopes it’s not what he thinks it is, but he really wants to be sure and clear out his suspicions.

His suspicions that Keisuke’s brought here as a Rocket, not a Trainer or a Breeder.]

[Somewhere easy to meet up with, but can relatively speak in private...]

Does the south exit's sound fine with you?

[Keisuke agrees, turns off the feed, then makes his way down to the south exit. By the time he gets there, he's pretty curious about what his friend wants to discuss.]

[At the south exit, Atsuro is watching his Mightyena and Arcanine racing against each other. It's an unfair competition, but Ada push herself against the larger Pokemon. You're not going to win this time. :|

Atsuro smile as he watch.]

[For a moment, the teen watches curiously. Better get to the reason why he had come out here, though.]

Hey, Atsuro...

[Even if he's not one for smiles, the sight of his friend brings one to his face easily enough.]

What's going on?

[He turns to face his friend.]

I want to ask you something and I want to clear it from my mind.

[He want this suspicion gone from his mind, to stop nagging him every time Atsuro see Keisuke.]

Keisuke...are you in Team Rocket?

[That...was not what he had been expecting, even though he'd been waiting for this day since he first showed up in Goldenrod City. The surprise on his face is genuine, and accompanied by a quick flicker of guilt.

Still, he's not quite ready to admit to it just yet.]

What makes you say that?

Just the small facts.

[Explaining how he arrive at his conclusion is familiar. It's been a while since he have done it, out loud.]

First, you arrived in Goldenrod instead of New Bark Town. All trainers and breeders pop up there first. In the past, we have people in Mahogany before. So maybe it wouldn't be odd if they start appearing in Goldenrod.

But...you have two starters. Every new people who starts out in New Bark always get one starter, even breeders. [Having two Pokemon would make breeding easier. But Keisuke's not a breeder, as far as Atsuro know.]

So I start thinking, since it bothers me. [The inconsistency of it.] I might be jumping to conclusion, but like I said, I want to clear it up.

[He still had a chance to brush it off--to shake his head and explain it away as "hard mode, remember?"

But Keisuke doesn't really...feel like keeping this to himself, anymore, and Atsuro wouldn't even be the first non-Rocket to know, thanks to Carmen Sandiego swooping into his life during the Toxicalypse.]

...You always were smarter than I was, Atsuro.

So it's true...

[He really hopes Keisuke would say no, that it's not true and Johto have given him a different difficult mode. But his friend's response all but confirmed it.

Keisuke's a Rocket. His friend's a part of the terrorist organisation, the people responsible for many things in the past.]

But why? How come you end up in Team Rocket? [Why Keisuke? What criteria was used to put him there? Or was it all random?]

It's not like I chose this. You do know that, right?

[To anyone else, Keisuke would be annoyed, but he's known Atsuro for years, and the other teen is really all he's got. Keisuke's made a few friends in this world, sure, but nothing came close to being equal to that.

All he really wants is for Atsuro to know that he's not a bad guy, even if he wound up as one in Johto, and that he's already done a few things he wasn't exactly proud of.]

The only thing I can think of is...it's because of what I did. Back home.

[Killing people, and playing God.]

I know but...

[He's just worried for Keisuke. Atsuro knows Keisuke isn't a bad guy. His friend always mean well, back in middle school and all the way into the lockdown.]

But you stopped doing that. You stopped and work hard to make up for it.

You don't deserve to be a Rocket.

...I feel like I do.

[Though that was something he wavered on, from day to day, because he had done his best to atone in the time before he had arrived in Johto. Talking about this out loud for really the first time just made the guilt bubble up.]

What good is helping Izuna and those few citizens, after all I did? Besides, if you all hadn't defeated Yama... I wouldn't have seen that I was wrong and stopped.

[Because sometimes, he still didn't feel all of it was wrong, if he was being honest.]

There'd be more people surviving.

[Even if they save them at the time, they wouldn't know what will happen to the citizens after they left. Atsuro can only believe in their survival.]

And... [There's a selfish part of it for Atsuro. He doesn't want Keisuke to die, from a person seeking revenge like Kaido, or an angry mob. That selfish part, his bonds and loyalty, is Atsuro's weakness.

Because what happens if Keisuke died? He probably won't be the same. He instinctively knows that.]
